Learning to Learn Differently in Higher Education
The demands for efficiency, competitiveness, rigour, scaling and broad impact have many casualties in higher education. There are numerous indicators that the approaches used to meet these demands have failed to prepare even the ‘elite' graduates for complex and uncertain futures. It is time to learn from individuals and communities for whom complexity, challenge, disruption and difference are daily realities. What does it take to foster intelligence that understands & thrives in complexity and diversity?

Recognize Exclusion, Design for Inclusion
In your experiences, what barriers do you (inadvertently) create and who do they exclude? We’ll take you through the Microsoft Inclusive Design principles and how they were used to create the Xbox Adaptive controller and then give you some tips on how you can remove unnecessary friction from your experiences.
Before designing the Xbox Adaptive Controller the team needed to recognize the barriers that traditional controllers create for people with limited mobility. What unnecessary barriers do you (inadvertently) create, and who do they exclude? Bryce will take you through the Microsoft Inclusive Design principles and how they were used to create the Xbox Adaptive controller and then give you some tips on how you can remove unnecessary friction from your experiences.
Please join us for a 5 Ã 7 Reception!

Toward Universal Design in Online Learning: The Interface Between Technology and Pedagogy
Online or digital learning is an increasingly important part of the higher education environment, as well as the professional development space outside a formal educational setting. Online learning is either delivered on its own or as part of a blended course syllabus. The opportunity to take a course online has also been presented as an accommodation to students with disabilities who have difficulty integrating within the classroom setting. Interestingly, accessibility in the online learning setting has evolved toward a discourse around technology, platform and format of material presented. Particularly for learners with sensory disabilities, accessibility of the content presented has become about the method of delivery of that content. While important, this emphasis has meant that the conversation around applying inclusive pedagogical approaches to online learning has lagged. Instructors for online courses face several challenges associated with digitally interacting with their students, but these challenges can be overcome with creativity and critical thought applied to curriculum development. This presentation will highlight the need for the interface between technology and pedagogy in modeling universal design in online learning environments, as well as the importance of applying inclusive design principles early in curriculum development. Key principles of differentiated instruction and inclusive teaching that educators can apply in course development will also be shared.
